Com­pe­ten­cy is the abil­i­ties required to do a job.
In his study of about 20 years, McClel­land found that top stu­dents will not nec­es­sar­i­ly be top-per­form­ing employ­ees. This led them to exam­ine the per­for­mance of employ­ees based on their respon­si­bil­i­ties and to extract the fac­tors of job suc­cess. These fac­tors were called competency.
One of the results of job analy­sis and prepa­ra­tion of job pro­file or job descrip­tion is to iden­ti­fy the nec­es­sary com­pe­ten­cies to do the job in terms of knowl­edge, skills and attitude.
