Tips for negotiating with your manager about salary increases and promotions
One of the uncertainties that professionals have in the current economic situation is when is the right time to ask for a raise and a promotion.
Is it even advisable to ask for a salary increase? Or leave it to the company’s decision? Of course, this request is the right of every employee. But everyone prefers to submit this request when the probability of acceptance is high.
In order for the salary increase request to be effective, it is better to do a few things beforehand and think about some issues and prepare the ground for acceptance:
- Estimate your performance level. That is, compare the tasks that have been asked of you and the results that you have provided. If good performance can be gleaned from this comparison, now is a good time to ask for a raise and promotion.
- Choose the right time for this work. If the company is struggling with sales these days or is in financial trouble, delay your request. Also, if your boss is busy or not in a good mood these days.
Instead, if you have just finished a project or work, that pleased the managers, do not hesitate to express this request for a salary increase.
Salary negotiation is an important part of human resources management skills and abilities.
- Be sure to check the message you want to send. It is better to take a look at the labor market information. See what the usual salary is for your specialty. Use this information in your negotiation.
- Take time from your manager to talk about this matter. Walk-in meetings without prior coordination are risky and can sacrifice such an important issue. It is better to have this negotiation face to face.
- Your meeting and conversation must be confidential and private. Listen carefully to what your manager is saying. Maybe it has an important reason that you should pay attention to and once understood, talk about it if necessary. Remember not to compare yourself to anyone else. You don’t have to agree on anything in that meeting. If you need to think about or consider the proposal further, ask for time off and agree on another meeting.
- Be sure to write down the important things after the meeting. After some time — perhaps a week is suitable — follow up with your manager about the result. Thank him for taking the time to review this. If the result is positive, that’s fine, and if not, you can think about another meeting. If the labor market conditions are favorable and you have no doubts about your abilities and performance, then it is time to look for a new job.
